Yesterday, Governor Jared Polis directed state agencies, including the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), to take action to safeguard Coloradans’ access to COVID-19 vaccines this fall. In response, CDPHE issued Public Health Order 25-01: Access to COVID-19 Vaccines and a standing order that allows all Coloradans aged 6 months and older to get a COVID-19 vaccine at a pharmacy without an individual prescription. These actions were taken in response to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decision to limit eligibility for COVID-19 vaccines to those adults who are either aged 65 and older or have a health condition that puts them at high risk for serious illness. Additionally, the federal body that publishes vaccine recommendations (which guide insurance coverage) has not yet issued guidance for this year’s COVID-19 vaccines. This has understandably created confusion for many Coloradans about whether they can get vaccinated and what it will cost.
In a press release, Governor Polis said, āColorado is committed to empowering individuals to make choices to protect their own health and safety, and I will not allow ridiculous and costly red tape or decisions made far away in Washington to keep Coloradans from accessing vaccines. Starting this Friday, the COVID-19 vaccine should be available to those who choose at many local pharmacies.ā
