Aurora, Colo. — The Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition (CCIC) announced today its new slate of officers and board members. The Board of Directors makes decisions related to organization-wide policies, oversees the organization’s operations, and authorizes rule making. The officers and members were elected during the board’s Jan. 19 meeting and their terms will begin immediately.

Edwin Asturias, MD, will continue to serve as President of the Board of Directors. Formerly vice president, Asturias assumed the role of president when the past president resigned due to personal reasons.

Asturias is an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, director for Latin America in the Center for Global Health and associate professor of epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health, and works in the sections of Pediatric Infectious Disease and General Pediatrics at Children's Hospital Colorado. A medical doctor graduate from the San Carlos University in Guatemala in 1989, he was board certified in pediatrics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in 1995. Trained in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he has been working in the area of vaccine research and policy in Guatemala and the Latin region since 1998. Asturias has also served on the Guatemalan National Committee for Immunization Practices, the Poliovirus Contention Commission, and advisory groups for the World Health Organization, including the Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety. He is a member of the Committee of Vaccines of the Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, the ACIP working group on flavivirus vaccines and chairs the International Affairs Committee for the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society.

“I am honored to serve as President of the CCIC Board of Directors alongside a talented, passionate and diverse board and membership,” said Dr. Asturias. “CCIC is at the forefront of many high-impact initiatives and is making great strides toward increasing vaccination coverage and better protecting Colorado children and their families from vaccine-preventable disease. This is an exciting time to lead the organization’s strategic direction.”

Asturias will be joined on the CCIC Executive Committee by newly-elected Vice President Jamie Reesman, president/chief executive officer of Passport Health Colorado. Together with his wife, Michelle Reesman, he has served as co-owner of Passport Health Colorado since 2005. Previously, Reesman held various marketing positions, including product marketing manager for Level 3 Communications, vice president of marketing for B.O.B.: Brief Original Broadcasts, director of marketing for The National Geographic Channel, the national director of marketing for High Speed Access Corp., and area manager for Time Warner Satellite Services.

Asturias and Reesman will serve alongside longtime members and officers Martin Pirnat, MD, board secretary, and Kraig Burleson, board treasurer.

Officers and members of the CCIC Board of Directors represent a variety of fields and areas of expertise, including pediatric health care, family practice, business, finance, nonprofit and community-based organizations, and government affairs.
