Funding Opportunity Aims to Accelerate Vaccine Equity for Colorado's Youth

Date: Friday, June 11, 2021

Jun 14 2021

Coloradans who live daily without access to critical services and opportunities due to race and/or their socioeconomic status have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 in Colorado. These same communities are likely to face increased challenges accessing the COVID-19 vaccine due to structural barriers. Some individuals may be reluctant to get vaccinated due to experiences with racism, bias and lack of trust and confidence in health care and other systems.

Ensuring all individuals have access to the vaccine and achieving a high vaccination rate across all Colorado communities is necessary to mitigate the disproportionate impacts of the pandemic and prevent widening disparities going forward.

Now that access to COVID-19 vaccines has opened for adolescents ages 12 and older, and as eligibility is expected to expand to include younger children this fall, we are committed to ensuring equitable access for youth to receive COVID-19 vaccines. Equity in information and access is a cornerstone for reduced transmission of the COVID-19 virus. Achieving COVID-19 vaccine equity for youth provides a path to promoting healthy child development and can support broad attendance and regular, stable engagement in in-person k-12 educational and post-secondary opportunities as well as enrichment and social activities.

Together We Protect – Colorado’s COVID-19 Vaccine Equity Fund supports community-centered and trusted Colorado-based organizations to provide culturally relevant outreach, education, and support to children, youth and/or caregivers to ensure that those who face systemic barriers have access to the COVID-19 vaccine. Efforts targeting youth who are currently eligible to receive the vaccine (ages 12 and older), as well as those likely to become eligible for the vaccine will be considered (emergency authorization for younger ages is expected in late 2021/early 2022). Grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 will be awarded to applicants from across Colorado.
