Clara Holder, Chaffee County Public Health

Clara joined Immunize Colorado in 2020 as an Americorps VISTA focused on immunization outreach and education. She is working locally with the Chaffee County Health Department in Salida.

Clara is a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Studies. While at the University, Clara spearheaded the expansion of the 501(c)3 nonprofit BrightSide Produce to her campus and surrounding communities. This expansion, which continues successfully today, addresses endemic urban food insecurity by serving neighborhood corner stores as well as food-insecure college students, and connects communities through food and activism. Through her work with BrightSide, Clara gained recognition as an Acara Fellow and an Ecolab Scholar.

Clara's other interests include sustainability, women's health, wilderness medicine, and rock and ice climbing. When she's not at work, she enjoys getting out into the vast amount of public lands Colorado has to offer, as well as being involved in various community efforts. Clara hopes to use this year with Immunize Colorado to provide a base for advocacy work and public health, before attending nursing school.

Favorite Movie/Book: Atlantics or Obvious Child (movies); Americanah by Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie (book)

Personal Hero: I'm so lucky to know so many inspiring and driven women from my time at school, guiding, as well as here in Colorado! I'm constantly reminded of their dedication to the work, and how best to go out and foster change in the world.

Hometown Fun Fact: Bayfield is a tiny town in northern Wisconsin and is wildly beautiful--it's located on the south shore of Lake Superior. Hiking, paddling, sailing, and biking abound. There's also an amazing local food scene and everyone is super cool.

Favorite Thing to Do in Colorado: I just moved here, and am looking forward to scaling some peaks and driving down those forest roads!

Why Vaccinate: Vaccinations are safe, effective, and affordable. They improve others' lives, not just your own! There isn't another public health intervention that's as well-researched or firmly backed that I can think of.
